Green solutions are transforming a West Philadelphia grade school

March 7th, Penn Today featured an article and video on the garden and edible food forest at Andrew Hamilton, a university-assisted community school.

With support from grants and the Netter Center, the Andrew Hamilton School in Cobbs Creek is now home to a food forest and a thriving garden, providing healthy produce, green space, stormwater management, and educational opportunities. On a November afternoon in 2021, dozens of members of the school community encircled the school building, digging holes, adding fertilizer, and situating berry bushes and fruit trees—peach, plum, cherry, and native pawpaws. The “food forest” planted that day is part of a transformation at Hamilton, galvanized by the community in partnership with a student-led team from Penn.
