Penn Reading Initiative

Penn Reading Initiative (PRI)  is a Penn student-run tutoring program that was developed through an Academically Based Community Service (ABCS) course taught by Bill Labov, Professor of Linguistics, and the Penn Linguistics Laboratory.  Labov created a literacy tutoring curriculum that adapted his ABCS work to provide tutors with essential knowledge for the teaching of reading, along with procedures for assessing the results. PRI tutors use The Reading Road, a curriculum that includes lessons, stories, and games designed to engage the interest of struggling readers. This program partners with the Netter Center's university-assisted community schools in West Philadelphia. The Reading Road materials have also been adapted by other colleges and universities.
